Technicolor Explores Game Asset Creation

Technicolor took a deep dive into computer and video game assets on Nov. 28, during the 14th episode of the “Learn, Create & Grow” webinar series, on “Games Assets Creation.”

During the webinar, Koushik Chatterjee, trainer at Technicolor Creative Studios Academy, delved into the fundamentals of design principles to the intricacies of 3D modeling for game asset creation.

Koushik took viewers through the essentials of 3D modeling and sculpting as well as dove into the nuances of creating assets that are seamlessly compatible with a variety of game platforms.

The goal was to provide viewers with insight into the core principles that make game assets stand out as well as learn how to strike the perfect balance between aesthetics and functionality, according to Technicolor. Viewers were also able to discover the latest and most powerful tools used in the game industry to create stunning game assets.

Before introducing Chatterjee, Soumyadipta Roy, a trainer for digital matte paint at the Academy, noted that the Learn, Create & Grow webinar series was designed “specifically for students and artists” by Technicolor Creative Studios.

The online “masterclasses provide students with a unique opportunity to gain an understanding of the work of various disciplines within the VFX industry,” he told viewers.

Chatterjee is a “seasoned professional with a wealth of experience spawning from more than 50 years in the creative field, with a remarkable portfolio encompassing the creation of diverse game assets, characters and immersive  environments,” Roy said.

“Koushik has also lent his artistic  talents and knowledge to prestigious high profile feature films, commercials and even Hollywood projects,” including Inception, according to Roy.

Recently, Koushik “moved into the role of 3D instructor, sharing his knowledge and experience with many, many talents across different regions,” Roy said. Currently, he’s a trainer at Technicolor Recruitment Studio, and he continues to inspire and nurture the next generation of artists in the vast field of animation,” Roy noted.

“For Koushik, teaching is not merely a profession but also a great fulfillment, and he likes to empower others so that they can find success in the exciting world of animation,” Roy added.

Koushik started his presentation with an exploration of the art of game asset creation. “By the end of this webinar, you will gain a clear understanding of what is game asset modeling and the whole pipeline,” he promised.

In video games, game asset design “refers to the creation and preparation of various digital elements,” he said, explaining: “These assets are essential to the development of a game, including everything from characters, environments and objects, to user interface elements, sound effects and music. It is both an aesthetic,  artistic and a technical aspect of game development that goes into the creation of game assets. An important factor in the overall success of a video game is the quality and details of its assets.”

Turning to  3D game assets, he said they involve “several stages from the initial concept to the final level.” The pipeline for 3D game assets “begin with basic steps to block out the overall forms of the assets,” he pointed out, adding it’s “focused on proportion, scale and syllabus.”

The webinar followed an entry in the “Learn, Create & Grow” series Oct. 31 that was focused on animation for toons. During that webinar, Lizzielet Gracia, trainer at Technicolor Creative Studios Academy, walked viewers through a diverse range of animation techniques, including 2D, 3D, clay animation and computer animation.
