Signiant: How to Move Wasabi Hot Cloud Data Quickly, Securely

Signiant provides Software-as-a-Service (SaaS)-based solutions that allows organizations to move large data sets into and out of Wasabi Hot Cloud Storage quickly and securely, according to Robert Browne, founder and VP of global technology alliances at Signiant.

The solutions support a wide range of media and entertainment (M&E) workflows, including cloud data migration, active archive, remote production, collaboration, media distribution and live events, he said during the Wasabi Technologies webinar “The Fastest, Most Secure Way To Move Data In And Out Of Wasabi Hot Cloud Storage.”

Isabel Freedman, alliance marketing manager, media and entertainment, at Wasabi, introduced Browne, who first discussed his company’s two primary products: the Media Shuttle software-based file transfer solution, and Jet, a SaaS-based solution that was developed to serve as an engine for automated system-to-system file transport between geographically distributed locations.

The file transport “can be within a business, between businesses, or to and from the cloud; it doesn’t matter, Browne said. “We guarantee that the data will get there in its entirety and we have a whole host of capabilities … resilient to errors. For example, if your network goes down, we’ve got checkpoint restart and you’ll start where you left off.”

Also, he said: “We can work over any IP network, public, private, terrestrial satellite – it doesn’t really matter – and we connect into the cloud, of course, including Wasabi.”

Jet also has several features and functions that he said “allow for … unattended or automated transfers,” adding: “One is it’s a policy-based system, so you can set different types of scheduling for the transfers. You can set up hot folders. You can decide which folders or directories you want to transfer when. You can set bandwidth controls, so you can use all of your network or less of your network. You can set it up to use less network during the day, more at night.”

There are, meanwhile, a “bunch of policies and configurations that you can set when using Jet,” which he pointed out uses the next-generation intelligent transfer protocol.

“It’s designed to be able to move content as quickly as possible over any network,” he noted. “It could be a 100-megabit-per-second network. It could be a 10-gig network. It doesn’t matter.”

If an organization is using object storage, he recommended trying to “determine what’s the optimal part size depending on the files you’re transferring.” After all, he said, the “optimal part size for really large files is very different than the optimal part size for small files.”

Wasabi will “automatically determine what’s the optimal part size, the number of streams to use, and so on.

So, the intelligence that’s based on machine learning … really does allow you to have any set of files that you’re trying to move to and from any location in the world, and you will get maximum performance without having to go in and tune or configure the system because it will automatically do that,” he went on to say.
