Standards, AI/ML, eSports Highlight SMPTE 2020 ‘Game On’ Topics

The state of industry standards in a COVID-19 world, the latest, emerging benefits of AI and ML, and the explosive growth of eSports are among the highlights of the Nov. 10-12 “Game On” event, presented by SMPTE, the worldwide society of media professionals, technologists and engineers.

The event will feature SMPTE’s popular Storytellers series, technical tutorials and training, programming with SMPTE partners, bite-sized keynotes, “Standards 101” sessions, and hot-topic discussions that will allow attendees to build a custom conference experience.

Among the highlights of the event: “Standards Session: Are standards still relevant in a post-COVID world?,” “Audio Engineering Society: Sound in Mandarin-Speaking Movies,” “Introduction to the Agile Methodology for Project Management,” “What’s It All About: The Heart and Spirit of Esports,” and “Boots on the Ground Esports: Real World Experiences.”

“The virtual format allows us to schedule the programming in a unique way. In fact, we are hosting 7 keynote speakers this year,” said Barbara Lange, executive director of SMPTE. “From blockchain expert Michelle Munson, CEO at Eluvio, to Bradford Young, cinematographer, there is a keynote for every attendee of SMPTE 2020. All told, we have more than 60 speakers from over 20 countries participating in the event this year.”

Along with Munson, other MESA member company speakers include a keynote from Hanno Basse, CTO of Microsoft Azure, Yonah Levenson with the Language Metadata Table, Dolby’s Jaclyn Pytlarz and Robert Wanat, Claire Southey with Amazon Web Services, and EditShare CTO Stephen Tallamy.

“SMPTE conferences — and especially this year’s remote event — are a great way to build a network and find people to put in your corner,” says Kylee Peña of Netflix, who serves as SMPTE 2020 Program Committee co-chair along with media tech innovator Chris Witmayer. “It’s a pathway toward creating your own professional community.”
